Description
Players learn to defend corners using a zonal marking system, where each defender is responsible for a specific area of the box rather than tracking an individual attacker. This drill builds understanding of spatial responsibility, the importance of holding position until the ball enters your zone, and the coordination required for effective zonal defending. It is particularly valuable for older age groups developing tactical sophistication.
Setup
Half pitch with full-size goal and GK. Set up 6 defensive zones inside the penalty area with cones. 6 defenders take positions in their zones. 4-6 attackers line up outside the box. Corner taker delivers from the corner flag.
Coaching Points
- +Hold your zone position until the ball is delivered — do not chase attackers out of your area
- +Attack the ball aggressively when it enters your zone, meeting it at the highest point
- +The near-post player must protect the front zone and clear any low deliveries
- +GK commands the back-post and 6-yard box area, communicating clearly on every delivery
Progressions
- 1.Add an extra attacker to create a numerical overload and test zone discipline
- 2.Vary the delivery — inswing, outswing, short, and driven — to test adaptability
- 3.After clearing the corner, defenders must transition into a counter-attack to a target on halfway
