How the math works

Fair playing time is calculated by dividing total game minutes equally across your roster. Each player's share is proportional to the number of field spots vs. total players. The calculator then determines how many substitution waves you need per half and how far apart they should be spaced to keep time balanced.

For example, with 14 players in an 11v11 game (25-minute halves), each player gets about 39 minutes on the field and 11 minutes on the bench. You only need one sub wave per half to keep it fair.

Quick Reference by Age Group

U8–U10 (7v7)

Typical roster of 10 players with 20-minute halves. Each player gets ~28 min on field, ~12 min on bench. Sub 3 players every ~7 minutes.

U11–U12 (9v9)

Typical roster of 13 players with 25-minute halves. Each player gets ~35 min on field, ~15 min on bench. Sub 4 players every ~8 minutes.

U13–U18 (11v11)

Typical roster of 16 players with 30–40 minute halves. Each player gets ~41–55 min on field, ~19–25 min on bench. Sub 5 players every ~10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate equal playing time in youth soccer?

Divide the total game minutes by the number of players on your roster. For example, in a 50-minute game with 14 players and 11 on the field, each player should get about 39 minutes of playing time. The remaining time is spent on the bench. Use the calculator above to get exact numbers for your team.

How many substitution waves do I need per half?

It depends on how many bench players you have. With 3 bench players in an 11v11 game, you need about 3 sub waves per half. With 5 or more bench players, 1–2 waves is usually enough. The calculator shows exact wave counts and timing for your roster.

What is a fair playing time policy for youth soccer?

Most youth soccer organizations recommend that every player gets at least 50% playing time per game at the recreational level. For competitive teams, 40–50% is a common minimum. Many leagues like AYSO mandate equal playing time. Check your league rules and use this calculator to plan rotations that meet the requirement.

How do I rotate players fairly in a 7v7 game?

In a 7v7 game with 10 players, each player gets about 35 minutes of a 50-minute game. Sub 3 players every 8 minutes per half. Pair players into groups and rotate one group at each sub window. The calculator above generates the exact schedule for any roster size.

Should goalkeepers be included in the playing time rotation?

Yes — at the youth level, every player should experience different positions including goalkeeper. A common approach is to swap goalkeepers at halftime and include them in the outfield rotation for their non-GK half. This gives all players equal field time while also developing versatility.

How do I handle playing time with 18 players on an 11v11 roster?

With 18 players in an 11v11 game (50 minutes), each player gets about 30 minutes on the field and 20 on the bench. You need about 2 sub waves per half, rotating 3–4 players each time. Pre-plan your groups before the game to avoid confusion on the sideline.
