Description

Defender practices jockeying an attacker across a 20-yard grid without diving in. The goal is NOT to win the ball immediately but to slow the attacker down and force them into a less dangerous area. Teaches patience and body position in defending.

Setup

Mark a 20x15 yard grid. Attacker starts at one end with a ball. Defender starts 3 yards in front of them. Attacker tries to dribble to the opposite end. Defender gets 1 point for every 3 seconds they delay the attacker, and 3 points for a clean tackle.

Coaching Points

  • +Stay on your feet at all costs — diving in is losing the battle
  • +Low center of gravity, knees bent, weight forward on toes
  • +Mirror the attacker's movements — if they go left, shuffle left
  • +Only commit to the tackle when the attacker takes a heavy touch
  • +Keep your eyes on the ball, not the attacker's body fakes

Progressions

  1. 1.Attacker gets unlimited time but the grid narrows to 10 yards wide
  2. 2.Add a second attacker as a passing option — defender must handle 1v2
  3. 3.Place mini goals for the attacker to score into rather than just crossing the line
  4. 4.Add recovery — defender starts 5 yards behind attacker and must catch up first
