Description
Players learn the structure and discipline of setting up a defensive wall and positioning the remaining defenders during direct free kick situations. This drill covers wall placement, the GK's role in organizing the wall, and how non-wall defenders track runners and mark zones. It builds the coordination and composure required to defend dangerous set-piece situations without panicking or leaving gaps.
Setup
Half pitch with full-size goal and GK. Place the ball 25 yards from goal at various angles. 4 players form the wall, 3-4 defenders mark zones and runners. 3-4 attackers position around the free kick with one designated shooter.
Coaching Points
- +Wall players must hold their position and not jump, turn, or duck — stay brave and block the shot
- +GK positions the wall to cover the near post and takes responsibility for the far post
- +Non-wall defenders mark attacking runners and block the edge of the wall for cutback passes
- +As the ball is struck, the wall jumps as a unit to block while GK shifts to cover open space
Progressions
- 1.Vary the free kick position — central, left side, and right side angles
- 2.Allow the attacking team to use set plays including layoffs, dummy runs, and chipped deliveries
- 3.After the free kick is defended, play continues live for 10 seconds to practice transition
